Health tech is a booming industry right now and to build the best health app, you need healthy infrastructure — but you probably already knew that.

What you may not know is that Red Hat just rolled out their OpenShift Online (Next Generation) service — the world’s first container cloud. This cloud-based service is designed especially for developing Docker and Kubernetes-based container applications. 

OpenShift Online (Next Generation) allows developers to build any app (traditional, stateful, cloud native, or micro services-based — using almost any language or framework), anywhere (your laptop, an OpenStack or VMware-virtualized datacenter, public clouds), and at any scale (automatically managing and scaling with containers built on Kubernetes).

There are many features of OpenShift Online (Next Generation) worth mentioning, but our favorite is Source-to-Image — which lets you deploy your applications as a kubernetes orchestrated docker container without having to touch a single Dockerfile. Just focus on your code and let the platform automatically build, deploy, and orchestrate your containers.

Now that we’ve piqued your interest, we want to see how you can use OpenShift Online (Next Generation) to build apps that help people manage their health. Build any app that runs on OpenShift Online (Next Generation) and makes a healthy impact.

As a part of this hackathon, you'll get access to a private OpenShift Online (Next Generation) environment for hackathon participants only. Your private environment includes up to 4 GB of Ram and 10 GB of Disk Storage!

Your app could help people:

  • get motivated to eat healthy or exercise using gamification
  • use their wearable devices to track or encourage health or fitness goals
  • manage chronic illness
  • communicate more effectively with their healthcare providers
  • encourage healthy practices for employees
  • or any other health app solution you come up with!

If it promotes healthy living and you build (or update) it to run on OpenShift Online (Next Generation), your app will be up for some sweet prizes. Eligibility

This hackathon is open to:

  • Individuals (who have reached the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry)
  • Teams of eligible individuals
  • Organizations (up to 50 employees)
  • Large Organizations (with over 50 employees) may compete only for the non-cash Large Organization Recognition Awards.
  • Employees of Large Organizations (with over 50 employees) are eligible as long as they enter the competition independent of their company and meet all other requirements.

Employees of Red Hat, Devpost, and contractors currently working with Red Hat or Devpost are not eligible.

Government Entities and employees of Government Entities, including contract employees are also not eligible for prizes. Please see Section 3 of the rules for full details.

Requirements

Main Requirement: Create a health-related (either physical or mental health) application that runs on our private OpenShift Online (Next Generation) environment for hackathon participants only, or port over an existing health-related application. 

Submission Categories:

  • Wearable/Home Automation Applications: Includes health-related applications that integrate with fitness trackers, smart watches, GPS devices, light/ temperature control, home security, energy optimization, or other connected devices.
  • Games: Includes health-related applications that gamify or entertain and educate users about their health.
  • Wildcard/General Health Applications: Includes any social, SaaS, or enterprise application meant to help users, or enterprises, keep themselves and their employees healthy. Applications might include sharing of health stats, encouraging weight loss, social health applications, etc.
  • Pre-Existing Health-related Application Migrated to OpenShift: Includes any health-related app that existed prior to the submission period. If your app existed prior to this date, you must submit to this category – even if you meet the requirements for other categories.

 Submit the following assets:

  1. A demo video (hosted on YouTube, Vimeo, or Youku). Your video should include a demo of your working application via a step-by-step visual demo. Make sure you also share with us how you’ve used OpenShift in your application.
  2. Please submit at least one image/screenshot of your application.
  3. A way to access your working application for judging and testing. (Here’s how.)

    Includes the use of the application and the problem it solves. In the case of Games – this includes the entertainment, creativity, and educational value provided.
  • Innovation
    Includes the uniqueness of the idea and application.

    Includes the quality of the application and the number of bugs identified.

    Includes the extent to which the application has intuitive UI and UX.
  • Platform
    Includes the extent to which the OpenShift platform was used in an interesting way.
